Showcase Application Guidelines and Information
17th Annual International Folk Alliance Conference
February 24-27, 2005
Montréal, Québec, Canada

Purpose of the Showcase Concerts:

All Showcase Committees are directed to present showcases that further the mission of the Folk Alliance. As an integral part of the Folk Alliance Conference, showcasing allows presenters, promoters, agents, record companies, and media people to see significant artists working in folk music and dance. We encourage applications from emerging or regionally well known artists, or artists significant within their genre but unknown to the larger community.

Showcases For Montréal

In 2005 Folk Alliance will host the meetings of European Forum of Worldwide Music Festivals (EFWMF) and the Network of Cultural Centers of Color (NCCC). The showcase programs will reflect the interests of all participants, and will be presented concurrently throughout the conference in both private and public venues.

The Selection Process:Separate selection committees, made up of experts in the styles being judged, will work with each genre grouping. None of the judges may have a vested interest in any performer that applies to showcase. Current directors of the Folk Alliance, NCCC, or EFWMF may not apply to showcase, but directors who are not members of the showcase committees may submit candidates.

    Why are there crossover categories?

The showcases in Montréal will be programmed into several concurrently running venues. In order to mix and match appropriately, different committees will be considering different mixes of artistic formats. Because of that applicants using the Folk Alliance Application may, at the discretion of the showcase committees, be pulled into the Strictly Mundial process - however, applicants using the Strictly Mundial Application will not be pulled into the Folk Alliance process!

How do I decide which application to use?

First consider the categories for the application. If the style you work in is not covered under an application, don't use that application. (i.e. Singer-Songwriters will only be considered in the Folk Alliance showcase application process. Likewise, world music artists will only be considered in the Strictly Mundial application process.)

If your music/dance is in one of the categories that is in both columns, here are some points to consider.

  • The non-world music portion of the Strictly Mundial showcase process will make up only 30% of that programming. The committee will be looking for strong roots artists and bands to balance the worldwide nature of the rest of the selected roster. Therefore, for North Americans this will be a very competitive application.
  • The mix of artists in Folk Alliance showcases will be similar to that of our past conferences, with each category having representation.
  • It is possible that the selection committees will move artists into the Strictly Mundial process, but artists will not be moved from Strictly Mundial into the Folk Alliance process.

    Can I apply to both?

Yes, if you choose to pay both application fees, you can apply to both processes, though we'd encourage you to select one process and only apply there.

    Why are the deadlines different?

The extended deadline for the Strictly Mundial committee allows us to encourage artists from around the world to apply. At the same time, decisions need to be made in an early enough time frame to allow all the selected artists to receive the benefits of advance conference promotion.

How have the eligibility requirements changed?

We have an extraordinary opportunity this year to present the best of the North American folk music and dance community to the world. We wanted to give as many artists as possible the opportunity to do that. Artists that have been mainstage showcase artists in the past two years (Nashville or San Diego) are not eligible to apply.

If Selected, Showcase Artists Must Do the Following:

    1. The performer, one member of the group, or the performer's agent must register in advance for the entire 4-day Folk Alliance Conference.
    2. Supply a list of performing personnel, tech sheet with stage plot, a good quality, glossy promotional photograph, and a 150-word bio for the conference program book.
    3. Showcase artists or their agents must sign a performance contract and releases regarding sound and video recording.

    Please Note:

    1. All showcase applications must include the appropiate application form and must be submitted in complete accordance with these instructions. All materials submitted become the property of the Folk Alliance and will not be returned.
    2. Performers are solely responsible for their material. The Folk Alliance will not screen or censor material of a performance. The views and opinions of a performer do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the Folk Alliance.
    3. Receipt of all showcase applications will be acknowledged by electronic or regular mail at the discretion of the Folk Alliance staff.
    4. The Folk Alliance Showcase Committees plan to make their selections by September 1, 2004. Applicants will be notified as soon as possible once invitations have been extended. Please do not contact our office before September 15, 2004 to inquire about selections.
    5. The Strictly Mundial Showcase Committees plan to make their selections on a rolling basis, with final selections being made in October. Applicants will be notified as soon as possible once invitations have been extended.
