Elaine Weissman Scholarship
(First-time Conference Attendee)

Since 2005, Folk Alliance has provided scholarships to over 100 conference attendees per year. FAI scholarships cover full or partial registration only. Conference scholarship request forms are available under the conference information button and Scholarship Fund donations are always welcome and appreciated.

The FAI scholarship program also provides a way for us to honor our longtime members that are no longer with us.

Mike Seeger Scholarship
(Traditional Artist)

Created in memory of Mike Seeger, a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers and recipient of a 2004 Folk Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award. Mike was a teacher and traditional music enthusiast who worked tirelessly to keep people connected with the roots of folk music throughout America.

The Mike Seeger Scholarship covers the cost of transportation and provides an honorarium to bring a traditional musician or other tradition bearer to attend the FAI Conference each year to participate in panels and performances. The fund is matched by FAI through the provision of a conference registration.

Gene Shay Scholarship
(Emerging Folk DJ)

Gene Shay is frequently referred to as the "Dean of Folk DJs." His career has spanned more than five decades on six different radio stations in the Philadelphia market, most recently at WXPN, where he did his final Sunday night folk show on February 1, 2015. Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Phil Ochs, and Tom Waits are just a few of the artists he interviewed early in their careers, a tradition that he's continued with today's best artists.

Beyond his radio work, Gene brought Bob Dylan to Philadelphia in 1963 for his debut concert, is a co-founder of the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and co-owner of Sliced Bread Records. He was present at the creation of Folk Alliance, and he was given Folk Alliance's first Folk DJ lifetime achievement award. Above all, he has been a friend and mentor to countless artists and DJs.

In his honor, the Gene Shay Scholarship has been established to annually send a Folk DJ for the first time to the Folk Alliance International conference. The award will include complimentary registration courtesy of FAI, plus hotel accommodations and at least a portion of travel costs.
