Description of Music

Sharon Goldman is a singer/songwriter/storyteller who has notably performed as a Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist and as a FolkDJ pick and One-Day Boston Showcase Artist at NERFA.

Her fifth solo album, KOL ISHA (A Woman's Voice), is a bold, unique song journey merging Jewish imagery, myth and memories with a modern, feminist perspective. She delves into memories of prayers and rituals; of roads not taken; and of voices not heard (The concept of Kol Isha is found in traditional Jewish communities, where women are not supposed to sing publicly in front of men). Many songs are inspired by her Orthodox Jewish childhood and conflicted, secular adulthood, but she also mines the stories of biblical and mythical women — such as Lilith, the Sabbath Queen and the lovers in the Song of Songs for creative inspiration. The album combines middle-eastern rhythms & instruments, intricate folk fingerpicking, soulful vocals and hints of slide guitar and blues for an irresistible sonic mix.

Named one of the Top 10 Folk Albums of 2016 by WFDU's Ron Olesko, the album reached the top 25 on the FolkDJ list for September and October 2016.

Her performances of the songs & fascinating back-stories of KOL ISHA, and songs such as  (solo or with band members including Stephen Murphy on guitars; Cheryl Prashker on percussion; Craig Akin on upright bass and Efrat Shapira on violin) have been received to rave reviews: "We've received nothing but positive feedback...thank you for delighting our members with a superb concert," -- Justin Nordell, Philadelphia Folksong Society
