Thank you to all those who ran in the election ballot.
Earlier this fall there were also four appointees announced to the board, you can see their names and bios here.
Referendum Motions Passed
In addition to voting for the new board last month, our membership voted to pass two motions to modify the FAI bylaws. Those motions are explained below.

Motion #1 passed with 92.7% approval to replace outdated portions of the mission and goals of FAI with an updated statement that reads "The Corporation exists to strengthen and advance organizational and individual initiatives in folk music through preservation, presentation, and promotion under the direction of its Strategic Plan."
Motion #2 passed with 95.4% approval to withdraw dated financial parameters related to the size of member organizations. These financial parameters remain unchanged but are now an internal policy which may be updated by staff and board (as opposed to a policy dictated by the bylaws).

Tanya Tagaq: 2019 Keynote Speaker

FAI is thrilled to announce Tanya Tagaq as our 2019 keynote speaker. She is a celebrated Inuk throat singer from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, in the Canadian Arctic who employs exquisite, unnerving vocal improvisations that bridge traditional roots with contemporary culture.

Tanya is a 2014 Polaris Prize-winning recording artist (Animism), author of a 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize longlisted novel (Split Tooth), an actress, a painter, and has collaborated extensively with Bjork, Kronos Quartet, Shooglenifty, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

The recipient of multiple Juno Awards, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and a 2016 International Folk Music Award nominee, her work addresses topics ranging from food sovereignty and environmental issues to the plight of women and indigenous peoples.

She has been hailed as “one of today's most electric, transfixing performers in any genre” (Rolling Stone), “forthright and opinionated” (The Guardian), and "fiercely contemporary" (The New York Times) and her novel remains on the Toronto Star’s best-seller list as of January 2019.

Tagaq is a mother of two and a Member of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest honors.
Past FAI keynote speakers have included Judy Collins, Al Gore, Billy Bragg, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Graham Nash, Ani DiFranco, and more.

Social Media Shoutout

Former President Barack Obama shared his picks for the Best of 2018 recently, and his top music choices included some of our own! He featured Official Showcase veteran Anderson East's song, "King For a Day", and other folk artists such as Brandi Carlile, Leon Bridges, and more! President Obama says he chose these artists for creating music he "found the most thought-provoking, inspiring, or just plain loved." Congratulations to these artists for making it into this former president's playlist!
