Scholarships Help First-Timers Attend FAI
Chances are you know someone who SHOULD attend FAI and hasn't made it yet. Share this email and let them know about the Elaine Weissman Scholarship for First-Time Conference Attendees. The scholarship supports artists and industry professionals coming to the conference for the first time. The scholarship covers full or partial registration only. In 2017, FAI awarded more than 100 first-time artist scholarships and 26 first-time industry scholarships for a total value of $35,905.
For those that are able, we also welcome financial contributions to the Scholarship Fund. Donations can be made on a one-time or monthly basis.

Artist scholarships close on September 15, 2017 (Scholarships for industry remain open)

    "Connecting Folk" Guides and First-Timers

We’ve created the Connecting Folk program to match a first-time attendee with a past attendee to share tips and advice. Volunteer to become a Connecting Folk “Guide” by filling out THIS FORM. Guides are asked to schedule a 30-minute call or meeting in advance of the conference for each first-timer connection. Once enrolled, FAI staff will connect you via email. It will be up to the guide and first-timer to arrange a phone or in-person meeting. We’ll start making introductions this fall. Conference attendance in 2018 is not mandatory to be a Guide.

    NPR Mentions
An impromptu gathering at FAI this year made NPR Music's list of "Essential Songs, Albums, and Performances of 2017!" Check out these folk artists from all over the world singing Woody Guthrie's folk anthem, "This Land Is Your Land" in four languages in this video recorded during Folk Alliance International. See the full list here, and many thanks to Folk Alley for the great quote!
Additionally, a great piece of press from FAI 2017 produced by Kansas City's local NPR affiliate radio station KCUR was featured in the weekend edition of All Things Considered. What a thrill to be featured! You can see our epic rooftop photo and catch journalist C.J. Janovy's great piece HERE.

Marisa Kolka, Development and Communications Coordinator
Marisa Kolka is a recent graduate of the University of Central Missouri, where she studied Public Relations and Spanish. She interned with FAI last summer, and after studying abroad in Madrid in the Fall, came back as an intern during the 2017 conference. Marisa said, "seeing everyone's hard work come to life was an amazing experience, and I'm excited to officially be part of the team!" She is working primarily in Development and Fundraising while also providing support to Communications in social media and to Membership in database maintenance. Marisa's quick thinking, creative problem solving, and good humor make us so glad she's "officially" part of the team!
    Jonathan Winston, Summer Intern
Jonathan Winston is a student enrolled at the University of Kansas in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, which he plans to use to further enhance his role as a full-time public servant within the capacity of city management. He has obtained an Associate’s in Arts degree as well as a certificate in Industrial Maintenance. He is demonstrably committed to getting as much out of the internship experience as possible. Jonathan said, "Folk Alliance has been such an inspiring aspect of my journey toward professional success." He works to support the entire FAI team and with his intellect, hard work, and quick wit, we're lucky to work with him this summer!

    Social Media Shoutout
We were honored to have Ramy Essam at the 2017 conference and couldn't be more excited for his recent collaboration with PJ Harvey. Speaking of the inspiration for "The Camp," Ramy said, "I believe that people, no matter who they are and where they come from, can have their freedom and live together in peace." His inspiration is evident in his art.
