2018 Board of Directors Election Slate

The election runs from Nov 8 - December 8, 2017 closing at 11:59 PM Central Time.

All nominees are members in good standing, and are listed in alphabetical order. Five Directors will be elected from this slate.

If you are a current Folk Alliance International member, you have the right, per our bylaws, to make a nomination or self-nominate to be on the ballot for the upcoming election. If you are interested, please begin the nomination process by clicking the link at the end of this webpage.

Alka Sharma (incumbent)

Executive Director, Folk Music Ontario - Ottawa, ON

Biography: Alka Sharma is the Executive Director of Folk Music Ontario, previously the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals (OCFF), based in Canada's national capital, Ottawa. In this role she oversees the operations, staffing and programming of Canada's largest folk music industry event. Prior to this role she worked as the Interim Executive Director at the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival coordinating the country's largest multicultural cinema event. Preceding that she served as the Senior Manager of Operations with the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Carleton University specializing in History and Political Science.


Daniel Cooper

Publicist, Hearth Music - Minneapolis, MN

Biography: Daniel Zephyr Cooper was born to be a music publicist. With a mother who is a key player in the Canadian folk music scene, Daniel grew up at music festivals learning the tricks of the trade. He first made his mark in Canada with the popular and acclaimed Pinball Sessions, a series of audio and video sessions filmed at his home in Toronto featuring artists like Pokey Lafarge, Sam Doores, Leyla McCalla, David Francey, Kacy & Clayton, Pharis & Jason Romero, and more. Prior to joining HearthPR he formed his own publicity company, Home Base PR. Most recently a resident of Seattle and now calling Minnesota home, he continues his search for underground country music and old pinball machines wherever he’s based.


Ellen Stanley (incumbent)

Executive Director, Minnesota Music Coalition - St. Paul, MN

Biography: A musician, DJ, promoter, writer and wearer of many hats, Ellen Stanley is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Music Coalition, the country's only statewide nonprofit that supports musicians of all genres at every level of their career. Before working at the MMC, Ellen was the Director of Publicity & Promotions at Grammy-winning Red House Records, where she was voted one of the "Best in the Industry" by Americana DJ's five years running. For the last 15 years, Ellen has hosted Womenfolk, a weekly music show on KFAI Radio. She also performs her own music under the name Mother Banjo.


Gary Paczosa

Producer / Engineer; A&R for Rounder Records - Nashville, TN

Biography: Gary Paczosa is a multi-Grammy winning producer and engineer. He is best known for his work with Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, and Sarah Jarosz. He has served on the Grammy board and also works as head of A&R at Sugar Hill Records in Nashville.


Laura Thomas

Agent/Owner, ComboPlate Booking - Austin, TX

Biography: Laura Thomas is the agent and owner of ComboPlate Booking, which opened in 1999. ComboPlate Booking is an artist agency representing folk, Americana and roots rock singer-songwriters. In addition to artist based tour services, volunteerism and community have been integral to Laura’s business. Since 2001, Laura has presented volunteer musicians at a monthly soup kitchen concert in Austin, Texas. In 2002, Laura started South By Soup Fest, a multi-day showcase at the soup kitchen. Since 2005, Laura has organized a day party raising funds for the same soup kitchen. SXSF and the day party take place during SXSW each year.


lou DeMarco (incumbent)

Founder, Momentary Love Management - Bensalem, PA

Biography: lou has been on the board for the past two years and has brought that Human Resources touch to the Board of Directors and the organization. After 27 plus years in the corporate world of HR, lou retired and created Momentary Love Management where he manages and consults with singer songwriters from all over the world. His demeanor is such that many artists seek out his advice on a regular basis. lou and his wife Loraine successfully ran lou and Rain's house concert series for years in Central New Jersey. They currently reside in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.


All petitions for nominations must be received at the FAI offices by November 1, 2017. The self-nomination procedure to be placed on the final slate requires the support of 10 members in good standing. This support can come in the form of an email or letter. All letters of support must be uploaded with the submission in a single document. Write-in candidates must also submit the same biographical info and platform statement to the Nominating Committee. All candidates must be current voting members of FAI.
